EDUCATOR

Committed to creating and fostering inclusive dance environments through education, her work critically examines how these perspectives affect the teaching and cultural dissemination of dance history.  She founded the Black Dance Teachers Association (BDTA) and initiated the Abby Warren Memorial Chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) 2024, presented at the Dance Educators Training Institute (DETI), leading the B.R.E.A.D. (Building Racial Equity in the Arts through Dance) & Butter of Southern Hip Hop forum and participated as a panelist in the Racism in Dance series hosted by the RVA Dance Forum.

Holding a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Virginia Commonwealth University, Neo is presently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Choreography at Jacksonville University. Her academic research explores the intersectionality of hermeneutics, whiteness studies, and Color-Blind and Color-Consciousness ideologies as they pertain to dance education and the dissemination of dance history and culture. It is her goal to research and create new knowledge surrounding praxis of commercial dance stemming from African diaspora communities to constitute inclusive dance spaces seated outside of Eurocentric centered supremacy.  Through her mentorship with RVA Swing she is working towards expanding her training and knowledge in Vernacular Jazz to establish new categories for dance competitions and conventions, with the aim to dismantle the standard positioning of ballet as the primary aesthetic and rubric for adjudication criteria.

Neo currently holds faculty positions at The Dance Academy of Loudoun (Leesburg, VA), Urbana Dance & Performing Arts (Ijamsville, MD), Premiere Dance Studio (Powhattan, VA), and Chesterfield Dance Center (Midlothian, VA) serving as a teacher and Choreographer in  hip-hop, jazz, jazz funk, contemporary, and lyrical. She also enjoys frequent engagements as a guest artist and visiting choreographer at competitive dance studios along the East Coast.
