Artistic Statement
Artistic Statement of Neo Lynch
As an artist, I approach my work from a socio-emotional perspective, driven by a desire to share Black culture through various dance genres. I prioritize the emotional responses of the audience, creating pieces intended to evoke socio-emotional reactions, spark conversations, and inspire new ways of thinking about Black art in commercial and mainstream contexts. My goal is to reflect how deeply interwoven Black culture is with the everyday aspects of American life. I strive to help viewers and participants recognize their connection to and impact by Black culture, fostering an understanding of the importance of fair, equal, and respectful treatment of African Americans, and encouraging contributions to the fight against social injustices faced by marginalized communities.
My art is not meant to strive for perfection but to be accessible and entertaining, serving as a reminder of the joy that Black art has brought to many. It stands as a rebellion against Eurocentric elitism in dance, which has often marginalized my presence and the presence of others like me. My work challenges the notion that a path in the dance arts must conform to Eurocentric standards of perfectionism. It embodies the duality of my Afro and Anglo-American experiences, heavily influenced by the attributes and contributions of the talented dancers I collaborate with. Their truths and abilities inspire me, creating a shared space that amplifies the potential of collaboration. My art seeks to convey hidden messages tailored to each audience and performer.

As an artist I seek to blend social justice with authentic dance modalities.
